Materials - Pen and Ink

Materials - Pen Nibs
The dip pen consists of a metal nib with a wooden or plastic holder, the nibs are available in various sizes.
Starting with , a Gillot fine 170 nib, medium 303 nib and wide 404 nib.
The 303 nibs are possibly the best one to start with, if you require a very fine point you can purchase plastic handled mapping pen (659 Crow Quill Mapping Pen).
You first need to clean a new nib in warm soapy water, this removes a very fine coating which is applied to prevent corrosion.
Next you need to gently smooth the end on 1000 grade wet and dry abrasion paper so that it glides across the paper / card with the minimum of drag. The more you use the same nib the smoother it will become with use.

Materials - Ink

The normal ink used in illustration is Indian Ink, it can be purchased in a wide variety of colours although Black is most useful because of it opaque quality, if you do need to thin it down you must use distilled water. You can also use Acrylic Ink / Paint.
